Although already part of Japan, Hokkaido was only developed from the
1870s. Previously, the shoguns were really only interested in
maintaining rule over Hokkaido to stop the Russians from moving in.
The Hokkaido Village in Sapporo shows buildings from the early years
and has a real frontier feel to it.
