In the 1860's, Hokkaido was pretty much inhabited only by the more or
less indigenous Ainu Indian population. Japan decided to "colonise" and,
following its "invitation" to trade, and the subsequent opening of Japan, the
US was called upon to help set up in the frontier land. One or two buildings
of the early years remain.
